So Valentine's Day is just a month away (what, you say you haven't put away the Christmas decorations yet?), and since it's typically a day about notes and cards and love letters, how can it not also be about pens? Montblanc apparently agrees, since it is promoting its very own "Ink of Love" in gorgeous red, priced at about $20 per 30 ml bottle. To go along with it, Montblanc suggests purchasing a Bespoke Nib for the focus of your affection. According to company literature, Montblanc has developed a computer software program that will analyze handwriting and create the perfect nib for one's unique writing speed, angle, pressure and more. National Handwriting Day

National Handwriting Day is right around the corner, and there are as many ways to celebrate as there are words to write. January 23 (John Hancock's birthday) is the designated day, and Fahrney's Pens of Washington, DC, is honoring the occasion with a handwriting contest, the winner of which will receive a Parker Ingenuity. All you have to do is send a short sample of your handwriting, expounding on one of three topics: how you came to appreciate fine writing instruments; your thoughts on cursive handwriting being eliminated from school curriculums; or, a personal life-changing event. Next month, in mid-February, the Los Angeles Pen Show will be held. It's a wonderful event, drawing people from all over the world, and it's one of the largest pen shows in the US. I've been asked to make a presentation on Saturday (the weekend of February 16-19), and the topic I suggested is "Twenty Pens Under $200." More people are watching their money these days, but that's no reason to give up enjoying a good writing instrument. Some of the topics I'll cover will include what you will and won't get in a lower-priced pen, what to expect in performance and warranty, and which brands offer such pens. I'd love to hear from you regarding your favorite lower-priced pen. Tell me which ones you like and why, and I'll be sure to give you credit in my presentation. According to the December 20 Mail Online, a 78-year-old British woman visited her doctor complaining of pain and weight loss. After a series of tests, it was discovered that the source of her trouble was a felt-tip marker she'd accidentally swallowed 25 years earlier while "poking her tonsils." The pen was clearly visible on a CT scan, and her team of doctors decided that it should be removed from her stomach, where it had sat for over two decades. The woman is recovering nicely. The marker? It still writes.

Another Christmas is upon us, and cards and letters abound. I think I've gotten just about every type of holiday card this year: e-cards, "dear all" letter reprints, photo cards, regular cards (with and without pre-printed signatures), texts and handwritten letters--and I even got a chocolate greeting card, a first. I'm sure it's not hard to guess which I prefer the most (no, it's not the chocolate), though I'm so grateful for them all. The handwritten notes are tops on my list, and while it certainly has a lot to do with my love of pens, that's not the sum of it. More likely it's because I feel like I'm getting a tiny and personal gift with each greeting: someone took the time to write and wish me well during this well-wishing time of year. Life, it seems, is becoming more and more about efficiency at the expense of the soul. Yes, it is much easier to mail en masse, email or even text a greeting, but the result is a bit austere. I prefer a simple straight-from-the heart handwritten line or two with all the messiness and character that goes with real ink on real paper. As I said, it's like receiving a very intimate little present. And I'm all about the presents. Happy holidays to you and yours.

I can't say the "I've seen it all" by any stretch of the imagination. At least I hope not. But I'm rarely completely surprised by a new pen product. I must say, though, that Taccia by ITOYA's new Altitude ballpoint really caught my eye when I first saw it. It's priced right, it's great looking, and it serves a niche. At just four inches in length, the pen is perfect for a pocket, purse, checkbook or briefcase--or in my case, an evening bag. I'm never without a pen (and it must be GOOD pen), and it's tough to find one that looks great and will fit in those crazy tiny bags that we women use when we go out for a dressy evening. S. T. Dupont came out with one several years ago, but at a much higher price, and so did Visconti, also higher priced, and these have fit the bill for me thus far. Priced at around $30, the Altitude is a steal. It has a guilloche finish and some really fun colors: Noble Violet, Aero Blue, Quicksilver Sage and Serene Pink. It uses a standard mini-ballpoint (D1) refill. And I like the packaging, too: it's all wrapped up and ready for gift giving, either to a friend or to oneself for making it through another round of holiday shopping.

Visconti created a pen in honor of the royal wedding of HSH Albert II of Monaco, Sovereign Prince, and Miss Charlene Wittstock, held July 1 and 2.

The royal couple agreed to the release of a special limited edition pen of just 388 pieces, and all profits from the subscription of the pen will be donated to a Monegasque charity chosen by the newlyweds.

Each pen is made from ivory-color resin and features a hand-crafted sterling silver filigree plated in 18-karat rose gold, evoking the Monaco Crown. The pen is available in either a fountain pen ($2,950) or rollerball. The fountain pen fills using Visconti's patented Double Reservoir Power Filler and features Visconti's 23-karat palladium nib in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, double broad and stub sizes. The most prolific inventor of all time, Thomas Edison is probably best known for his invention of the incandescent light bulb. And his developments resulted in over 1,000 patents during his lifetime. The Krone pen company is paying tribute to Edison with its newest limited edition, the Thomas Edison collection.

The Italian resin from which the cap is made is shaded from dark to light and houses a functioning light bulb. Edison’s distinctive autograph decorates the sterling silver cap band, and the barrel, which features a hand-painted portrait of Edison, is embellished with a gilded light in gold leaf. The pen’s blind cap is reminiscent of the base of a light bulb (WARNING...this is for decorative purposes only...do not plug your pen or any part of it into any electrical source...injury may result and then you will feel really silly).

As I ponder the horror of 9/11, now ten years ago, I can't help but think about all the phone calls, texts and notes that were instigated during the harrowing time after the attack. It's an undisputed fact that when it looks like our life as we know it is over, the first thing that occurs to us is to communicate with those dearest. September 11 will always be a day of meditation for me. And if it's true that the only way to make sense out of tragedy is to raise something good from the ashes, I'm living this day to the fullest. I'm also making it a point to let my loved ones know what they mean to me, since so much of our humanity is buried in the rash surprise of our mortality.

Have you seen the new Terzo pen from Richard Greenwald? I saw the new models firsthand at the DC pen show a couple of weeks ago, and I really liked it. Terzo, meaning "third' in Italian, was first designed in 2008 as a button-actuated ballpoint pen approximately 5.5" long and weighing about 1.1 ounces or 32 grams. The plastics, internal brass fittings, external sterling silver fittings, and the engraving were all produced "in house" in Potomac, Maryland, as were most of the tools and taps used to produce the pen. The easyFLOW 9000 refill is from Schmidt. Greenwald's pens are available at Bertram's Inkwell the Pen Haven, both in Kensington, Maryland, or directly from Richard.

I visited Richard's home-based manufactory a couple of years ago, and it if you like well-equipped and well-organized workshops, which I do, you'd like this one. He mixes all his own plastics (some are quite interesting), and his first-rate operation is right in his basement. But this is no ordinary basement, and Richard is no ordinary guy. He retired from his former career a few years ago and now structures his day around this new avocation. He has a variety of other interests he avidly pursues, including art, photography and cars--and fine cigars, which I had the pleasure of experiencing "second-hand" in his smoking room that, no surprise, is also well-equipped. Fun.

ACME is opening its first shop-in-shop in the US at the Art Brown International Pen Shop in Manhattan. The official opening is this month, and the store location is 2 West 45th Street near Fifth Avenue. The display--located at the front of the store--houses ACME's collection of pens, card cases and accessories created by an eclectic selection of architects, artists and designers, from Frank Lloyd Wright to Shepard Fairey. Lesley Bailey, ACME's co-founder and vice president, says, "To say that Art Brown is the obvious choice for an ACME shop-in-shop would be an understatement. Their reputation and prestige coupled with ACME's design and production standards make this the ideal partnership." Art Brown has been a Manhattan staple for 87 years. Family owned and operated since 1924, it has welcomed a number of prestigious clients, including Norman Rockwell back in the day. Always one to buck tradition with amazing new shapes and materials, Jean-Pierre Lépine elevates penmaking into a realm much closer to sculpture than anything else on the market today. His recently introduced Sunday Afternoon ballpoint pen, while not yet available in the US, is a gentle curve of a pen that required, according to Lépine, special tools and mechanisms that he produced himself. Lépine's manufactory is in the Jura region of France, a picturesque place I visited many years ago. Its pastoral setting and long winters have been conducive to watchmaking and, at the hand of Lépine, pens. The Sunday Afternoon is aluminum and will be available in various lacquer finishes.

I've never met a Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen I didn't like, and others agree, making it one of Pilot's bestselling higher-end pens. Melding the great writing pleasure of a fountain pen with the ease of a click-type pen (a simple click of the button extends the 18-karat nib), the Vanishing Point has gained near-cult status probably because of the amazing array of colors that have been introduced over the years and because of the affordable price--$225 these days. My daughter and son-in-law had a son a few months ago, and I’ve already started writing him letters. I started writing when he was just a month or so old, and I sent him a thank-you note a few weeks ago for a lovely gift “he” sent me. I used printed block letters rather than script, but I’m really not sure why. I think the impetus for all the writing (besides the fact that I love to do it) was a box of letters I recently found from my mother to our daughter. They span many years, starting with short notes to her when she was just a wee one, to cards and letters to her while in college—and everything in between. There were congratulatory notes for good grades and other accomplishments, birthday letters, and even a note referencing a few dollars enclosed for a lost baby tooth, money long gone but the sentiment still very much intact. What really touched me was the familiarity of my mother’s hand and how it changed over the years according to our daughter’s age, from printing to measured script to Mom’s usual hurried scrawl signifying that our daughter was indeed old enough to decipher it. My Mother has always had too much living to do to worry about perfectly formed letters. The whole of them form a loving written chronicle of their relationship for a couple of decades, and they are priceless.

I tried to immortalize other notes a few years ago. When my husband and I were planning our daughter’s wedding, we exchanged literally hundreds of emails with her since we live so far from one another. Some were hilarious. Some were quite serious. Each was so poignant in its own way. I thought I’d print them and bind them as a first anniversary gift, but I never did. Email addresses changed, inboxes got overburdened, and they ultimately and easily found their way to that cyberspace graveyard via the delete button. So whatever your feelings about technology, pens and writing, there’s a timelessness and gravity in the written word that conjures the past and offers up the future like nothing else. And it defies deletion.

Take a walk to Runcible Spoon

While in Providence recently, I visited one of my favorite spots, Runcible Spoon. It is located at 195 Wayland Avenue, just minutes from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design in historic Wayland Square. During a brief chat with the owner, I learned that the interior store space was designed and built by her sons, and each display case was made and finished by hand--perfect to hold the myriad cards, stationery and pens the store has to offer. Runcible Spoon has been in Providence since 2003 (the Newport location closed recently), and it is a fun place to wander. I was impressed by the unique greeting cards, many from small and independent card makers, and the array of gorgeous letterpress stationery (and Lamy pens). Invitations and personal stationery are mostly from William Arthur, Tag & Co. and Crane. Greeting cards and boxed sets of stationery (and other paper goods) are from Rag and Bone, Joshua Graham, Caspari, Driscoll Designs, Saturn Press, Meri Meri, Filofax, Crane and many more. But why the name? The store also carries great tabletop items and gifts. This is a must-see store if you're ever in the area, and be sure to stop at one of the great coffee and sandwich shops within walking distance.

The Conklin Glider Chase Design Collection

The latest addition to the Conklin pen collection is the Glider Chase Design. The process of chasing is used to create a decorative design and texture that is embedded into the surface of the pen’s material. In the 1900s, most pens were made of hard black rubber, and chasing (also known as guilloche) became a popular process to add creative and intricate design to the otherwise common look of a simple black pen. This complicated hand engraving, or chasing, afforded talented artists the opportunity to display their unique abilities. Since the chasing process required excellent skills and was very time consuming, it added value to the pen. Today, most pens are made from resins instead of hard rubber. Author David Shepherd, who is introducing the latest in the series of books about specific Parker pen models, was at the Chicago Pen Show. The latest book is Jotter, History of an Icon, and a signing was scheduled for Saturday, May 14 at the Westin O'Hare. But it seems the books were delayed in Customs and never made it to the show. While disappointing, this tome is well worth the wait: I perused the one sample copy in town and was duly impressed. The research is impeccable, and the book is well organized, mostly chronologically. The old photos are captivating, drawing the reader in to a specific place in time. Authors Shepherd, Graham Hogg, Geoffrey Parker and Dan Zazove collaborated on this 325+-page hardbound full-color book, which is a must-have for any serious Parker collector. Last weekend was the Chicago Pen Show at the Westin O'Hare in Rosemont, and I had a great time despite the cold, windy and rainy weather. I think this show beat my last for record sales of the 2011 Stylus Annual, and I was delighted to autograph a number of them (I offered, and what could any polite person do but accept? Overheard: one person said he was going to sell his signed copy for big bucks when I leave this mortal coil...I was flattered, I guess...). Kenro Industries was there with a beautiful assortment of pens (the company now distributes quite a few brands, including Montegrappa, Omas, Aurora and, as of last week, Sheaffer). Brian Gray was there with his fabulous collection of Edison pens, as was Howard Levy of Bexley. Retailers included Total Office Products, Bertram's Inkwell, the Pear Tree Pen Company and the local Paradise Pen. Of course no show would be complete without Pendemonium. Show hosts Don Lavin and Dan Zazove were ever-gracious, offering Stylus the usual prime real estate at the front of the room--a fun and "safe" location, thanks to Ken and Robert.

Artisan Barry Gross was selected from among nearly 1,000 applicants to participate in the Paradise City Arts Festival, May 28, 29 and 30, at the Three County Fairgrounds in Northampton, MA. Thousands of images were reviewed last September, with only 260 artists selected for this prestigious show. The applicants' work was judged on the basis of imagination, technical excellence, design and originality. Named among America's Top Ten Art Fairs since 2004 by AmericanStyle magazine, Paradise City Arts Festival's 2011 ranking is #3 nationwide. Paradise City offers innovative shows of fine crafts, paintings and sculpture, with a diverse selection of the newest work at the cutting edge of design from the studios of both emerging and established artists. I am intrigued by the new limited edition Automobile Lamborghini by Omas. Inspired by the Aventador luxury car, the collection comprises 700 cartridge- or convertor-filled fountain pens and 700 rollerball pens, each crafted from orange or black cotton resin with ruthenium trim. The pens were just introduced at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, March 3 to 13. I think the shape of the pen, with its angles and curves, is fabulous. And I am a sucker for orange pens. David at Dromgoole's

Dromgoole’s of Houston hosted a pen event on Thursday, March 31, to celebrate the introduction of David Oscarson’s latest collection, Lewis and Clark, a tribute to the two explorers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Lewis and Clark’s signatures are represented in high relief surrounded by a background of gentle river currents underneath. Both collection pieces feature a map of the Louisiana Purchase marking the Lewis and Clark Trail from St. Louis, Missouri, all the way to Fort Clatsop, Oregon. The Meriwether Lewis cap features a telescope clip and a compass rose. The William Clark cap has a feathered clip, and a Peace Medal (given by Lewis and Clark to many of the Indian chiefs along the trail) is engraved on the barrel. The Lewis and Clark collection features guilloche engraving and hard enamel, and it is available in two design variations, each limited to 100 pieces. The fountain pen is priced at $4,900 and the rollerball, $4,700. Meriwether Lewis is in translucent ruby red with gold vermeil, and William Clark is in translucent sapphire blue hard enamel.

The turnout at Dromgoole's was great, with many pen collectors and aficionados in attendance. Dr. David Pustilnik, Dromgoole's own nib adjuster, was there doing a brisk business. And Larry Dromgoole, the quintessential host and owner of the store, made sure that everyone had a great time. I certainly did.

One of the hallmarks of success, I believe, is a company’s capacity to surprise—its customers, consumers, and sometimes even itself. And that’s just what Caran d’Ache has done with the introduction of its new high-tech, Swiss-made RNX.316, just released. A huge step from its highly decorated limited editions and beautifully crafted pillar lines, the RNX.316 is not only specialized in its appearance, but also in the material used to make it: 316L stainless steel, known for its strength and imperviousness to heat and cold. And the name RNX, while sounding acronymous and state-of-the-art, is actually a nod to the company’s rich heritage, which began in Switzerland in the early part of the twentieth century. It is a riff on the words “round and hexagonal,” two shapes that have done the company proud. This collection is no exception, since it incorporates both iconic silhouettes in its design.

The RNX.316 comes in two versions: PVD (physical vapor deposition) Black and Steel. Having recently seen both versions in Switzerland, where they were introduced in January, I must say that it’s hard to pick a favorite. The black, which is laser engraved, has a futuristic stealth appeal, while the plain steel pen is simply a great looking instrument that relies on interesting chiselling and polishing effects to woo its user. Its guilloche is created using a special engraving process wherein a spiral effect is created on different planes. It’s all about the juxtaposition of profiles.

The fountain pen (there’s a rollerball, ballpoint and mechanical pencil, too) has a steel PVD-treated nib available in fine, medium and broad sizes--wonderfully smooth, I might add. Another interesting note is the innovative cartridge changing mechanism for the fountain pen and capped rollerball: the system for changing the cartridge also activates the opening of the writing block. By unscrewing the lower part of the body, a counter-screw mechanism advances the writing block and enables the cartridge to be easily changed. A guide piece ensures that the two elements are perfectly aligned and allows the writing instrument to be closed with a single click. The ballpoint has a pushbutton mechanism and is fit with the Caran d'Ache’s Goliath giant cartridge in fine, medium and broad sizes. The mechanical pencil has a pushbutton mechanism with a replaceable eraser under the button. It uses 0.7 mm lead. The RNX.316 ranges in price from $198 to $390.

Blending Traditions

Two leaders in social communication announce a partnership that blends traditional artistry with twenty-first century technology. Bernard Maisner Studio and Paperless Post are releasing an exclusive line of hand-painted and hand-lettered designs created by Bernard Maisner specifically for online usage. In addition to brand new designs, many of Maisner’s famous paper images, along with his inimitable and elaborately flourished calligraphy, have been adapted to an online format. From hand-painted cocktail party invitations to engraved note cards and hand-lettered greetings, the pieces are offered for a variety of occasions.  

Mainser's retail line, which is sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Gumps and Neiman Marcus, and his custom invitation work, are among the most sought-after stationery in the world. He can produce only a limited amount each year, since all the calligraphy and design is done by his own hand. Outside of his collaboration with Paperless Post, all of Maisner’s retail and custom designs are engraved on 100% cotton paper. By contrast, Paperless Post invitations and cards are designed and delivered online. The company was founded by brother and sister, James and Alexa Hirschfeld.

Is tobacco the new black?

Watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos is introducing a new, lower-priced pen line call the Historiador. Produced by Italian pen maker Montegrappa, the pens are crafted from resin (available in "ivory" and "tobacco") with a choice of silver- or gold-tone trim. The clip is reminiscent of the lugs on the watches in the Historiador timepiece line. Available as a fountain pen with a 14-karat gold nib or a rollerball, each is priced at $1,395 or $995 respectively. Cuervo y Sobrinos first introduced pens to its line of luxury items a few years ago. This year, jewelry is making its debut.

Though no photos of the pens are yet available, I did see prototypes at the recent BaselWorld trade show. They are well made: finely detailed trim, good balance (the cap is not designed to post), and all parts fit together well. My favorite is the tobacco color, which is a warm tone that is both unique in the world of pens and neutral in a more interesting way than black.

I am at the BaselWorld watch and jewelry show in Basel, Switzerland. What a wonderful few days it has been, seeing and touching some exquisite new timepieces slated for introduction later this year. To make matters even better, it is spring in Basel, and everything is in bloom along the Rhine. If only I could find a few pens around here, life would be perfect. But wait: Montegrappa is exhibiting, as is Caran d`ache, Edelberg and more. Stay tuned for interviews and pictures when I return to my office this weekend.
